basically there’s a mom and pop restaurant in the town of Mattoon, IL called Burger King, which predates the national chain’s existence. When the first BK chains opened up in Illinois they went to court to defend their trademark. The settlement ended up allowing BK to open anywhere in the state, except for within 20 km of the family-owned Burger King, which still exists to this day.
