The Mets bought out the rest of 6 time all-star Bobby Bonilla's contract in 2000. Rather than accepting the $5.9 million all at once, he convinced the team to make annual payments of $1.2 million for 25 years starting July 1, 2011, with an 8% interest.
This deal makes more sense on the Mets' side when you remember the owners at the time thought their investments with Bernie Madoff would result in huge returns. For some reason, it didn't work out as planned.
So raise a glass to Bobby Bonilla, who receives $1,193,248.20 today, and will do so every July 1st until 2035. May we all get that bag as hard as he did.
