i think a lot of drama/romance stuff relies on tropes of misunderstandings because it's a way to create conflict without anyone having actually done anything wrong. like if someone mistakenly assumes that their partner is cheating on them (a common trope), the story gets to act as if that happened for a little bit, but can resolve that without anyone actually having fucked up or having to be hurt long-term.
and that's for cowards. people fuck up and hurt the people they love, that's the real shit. i think there's a fear in both creators and readers of having their main cast actually 'step out of line' and it is dull.
