that was my first actual Earthsea experience back when it came out and I remember nothing at all about it. I was thinking about revisiting it, even though everyone says it's not very good
i think taken purely on its own it's fine, i certainly didn't hate it when i first watched it. but it's also like... struggling against the weight and reputation of being a Ghibli film, and also is just kind of a bad adaptation of the source material as it turns out.
I must have just figured Ghibli plus le Guin would be a great synergy, from her reputation.
It’s tragic, given the obvious influence of Earthsea on the outputs of both Miyazakis, that the adaptation was Goro’s first shot and that he missed so badly. Imagining a good Ghibli version of an Earthsea story is so easy and it will never happen :(((
