i spent basically this whole month playing FF7 Rebirth, plus it's the back half of the anime season, so not a whole lot of new stuff here. including a few revisits of older/ongoing things, stuff that recently wrapped up

Anime revisits

  • Brave Bang Bravern
    • goddamn it was so good from start to finish. incredible gay mecha anime. it's for mecha fans, it's for super robot fans, it's for BL fans. i laughed, i cried, i squee'd. absolutely huge recommend.
  • Shangri-La Frontier
    • i can never fully explain why this series works so well for me. in large part it's that it's truly interested in telling a big crazy video game story rather than using that as an excuse for the worst naroukei bullshit like so many others. Season 2 just got announced and i'm extremely excited for the anime to get to some of the later stuff in the manga, it'll be a good time.
  • Delicious in Dungeon/Dungeon Meshi
    • it's just so damn good. one of my all time fav manga, and the adaptation is mostly incredible (barring a few of the earlier eps that are Just Okay). where the anime is as of writing is just at a major turning point in the story, and things only pick up pace from here. a++, farcille forever, bless these dungeon kids.
  • The Apothecary Diaries
    • Season 1 is over, Season 2 just got announced. it was great, wonderful adaptation of a wonderful series, i can't wait to see more. Maomao is my number one girl, the show truly exists to showcase her and that's wonderful.

Books

  • A Court of Wings and Ruin
    • the third of this series. it's..... you know, it's still pretty basic. it's "sexy", but almost entirely in an extremely heterosexual way. a guy with big bat wings does get off by having them rubbed so that's a plus. there are finally some gay fae in this one, we've hit the big time. the fantasy epic elements are truly very by-the-numbers, but there's some fun stuff.
  • Tehanu
    • i liked this a lot better than The Farthest Shore, but it does still feel kind of.... muddled. four books into this series and i no longer know what Le Guin's.... purpose is with these books? i can't easily reconcile the themes of finding the power and strength in the lives of common folks with having a dragon show up and fix all the problems.

Games

  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
    • God what a hugely mixed bag. i love so much of the character writing, how everyone gets fleshed out, how the story has been retold and changed and expanded. i like a lot of the random goofy side bits too - Queen's Blood was one of my favorite things in the game. but god the AAA-ness of it just kept smacking me in the face. i really don't feel the game needed to be this style of open world checklist thing.
  • Dragon's Dogma 2
    • what a total whiplash this is coming from FF7 Rebrith. a game that is almost a sort of antithesis to the Modern AAA Open World Game. i'm having a great time with this, setting off in a random direction and finding adventure is always a good time, in a way that Modern AAA Game Design gets in the way of. i do wish that the characters felt more..... extant?
