I'm a Vietnamese cis woman born and currently living in the U.S. You may know me from Sandwich, from Twitter or Mastodon (same username), or on Twitch as Sharkaeopteryx. I do not have a Discord or Bluesky account.

Ask me about language learning/teaching, cooking/eating food, late diagnosis ADHD, and volunteer small business mentoring. Or don't, I'm not the boss of you.

block the boat tacoma

Tacoma, the boat is at your port today. it was supposed to be loaded at 7am or 8am, so far no loading has occurred due to protestors blocking since 4, 5am onwards. They have expressed theyll need reinforcements and continuous backup to keep the boat from leaving and prevent loading of weapons to israel. as of ~30 minutes ago its rumored at least one worker has gotten off of the boat.

update: so, this turned out to be "we delayed the boat for 12 hours" which i was a bit worried abt after the boat was already able to leave oakland. its really important that Block the Boat, a strategy with a history of successfully preventing Boats from docking or departing ports entirely not turn into photo ops where the boat isnt actually fully blocked. kind of embarrassing but tracking for recent attempts at actions (people keep letting the barricades and lines get broken by police officers)

something's fishy here. the panama canal is low on water so prices are high and lines are long, I'm not convinced a West Coast ship is like, plan A through M to get weapons to Israel.

the media attention is good, (though i worry it'll be easily undermined), but there's plenty of supply ships on the east coast.

and they'd use planes.

all i have is what ppl have expressed pretty thoroughly on twitter. i have no access to anything internal. but if i hear any updates abt the situation that express it isnt what its been claimed to be ill add them on here. main source of claim that the military aid to be loaded is headed for israel after Tacoma is Arab Resource and Organizing Center

what i do know it is a military ship that has transported supplies to iraq in the 2000s and participates in exercises and redeployment. they are successfully blocking trucks from loading it. so while we dont know what sorts of weapons or supplies or what have you these shipments could be, it doesnt rly seem like its not a military ship being loaded with Something probably for israel

right, the entire fleet does, but supplying ongoing US military action with a ship train and sending a few ships are different. I'm not saying it's nec. a problem with the protesters, just like, confidential source, ship on wrong coast that everyone has already been protesting, etc. it seems sus so just, careful out there.

it departed from oakland because the ship was idled in Alameda as part of the ready reserve fleet, that's where they had it stationed in reserve. i can at least speak to that part of "why it's on the west coast." maybe the east coast ready reserve were occupied with ukraine? dunno. but even so, it's been taken out of reserve to do something, i guess

right, but there's 72 ships in the fleet. and half the missions aren't .mil. I don't think it's a trap (outside of as a relief valve / grease trap for protest action if it is) but nothing about it makes sense logistics-wise. It may be resupplying stocks sent to the East Coast by train, I guess, but that'd be second order.

I suppose it's entirely possible the US wants to drag it's feet while waiting to see what Egypt and Pakistan think of it though, but even then.
