Good morning! The state of New Mexico was not named after the country of Mexico! Both of them are named after the Valley of Mexico, which is the location of Mexico City. New Mexico was named several hundred years before Mexico gained independence!
I thought it was like some sort of mystical island in like an Irish legend or something.
There are several potential explanations, but I don't think any of them involve Ireland! California was named by Spanish invaders, so the most likely roots are Spanish, French, or Arabic words
Maybe I just thought it was Irish, probably heard it was Gallic and misheard it as Gaelic.
And my grandparents still sometimes have to get in fights on the phone about whether New Mexico is international shipping from the US!
