Ngl, something about this prompt kind of rubs me the wrong way. No offense to Noel, I don't think she meant it in any particular way including the one I'm going to talk about here, and I'm not addressing her or blaming her in any of this.
I think it's just that, because I'm barreling through my backlog of these (for which I blame no one but myself), seeing this phrase right after sitting through all the weighty feelings from the last post is a little…profoundly exhausting.
It reminds me of the people I talked about in the last post, the ones who "left" Christianity but still continue to do extremely Christian monoculture-affirming things at the non-celebrants around them. It makes me think about how many of them would be happy to celebrate a "new" holiday that just happened to be everything they were already doing.
[once again I know that's not what's intended by the prompt and it could literally be anything, this is just where my brain is now]
And this resembles a pattern I see a lot in ex-Christians (especially but not exclusively ⬜️ ones). They leave the harmful ideas but keep the harmful ways of thinking, which means their first choice of solution will always be "same as the old but 'opposite', or with big shiny new labels slapped on."
Anyway, I'm genuinely sorry this turned out to be Rant pt. 2 bc I do enjoy creating holidays as part of world-building; it makes me dive into the mindset of the world and helps me learn what the different societies value and sanctify.
Oh well. Just 2 more to go! Hopefully I got all the venting out of my system.
