I'm a Vietnamese cis woman born and currently living in the U.S. You may know me from Sandwich, from Twitter or Mastodon (same username), or on Twitch as Sharkaeopteryx. I do not have a Discord or Bluesky account.

Ask me about language learning/teaching, cooking/eating food, late diagnosis ADHD, and volunteer small business mentoring. Or don't, I'm not the boss of you.

I think people deserve to be young, make mistakes, and grow without being held to standards they don't know about yet and are still learning. So, if you are under 22, please don't try to strike up a friendship or get involved in discussions on my posts.

Please don't automatically assume I follow/know/co-sign someone just because I reposted something from them—sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Also, if you think being removed as a follower when we're not mutuals is a cardinal sin, please do not follow me.

not the same anon but can you elaborate on the "no artistic skills isn't real" point a little? I'm turning it around in my head and I feel like I kind of get what you're saying but it isn't quite clicking for me.
If I'm filling in a lot of blanks... are you saying that you should do a bunch of trial and error to find what is both within your skillset and fits your aesthetic sensibilities? it seems like it could take a while to find that sweet spot and in the mean time the process doesn't seem like it would be fun or rewarding, and I'm not sure whether that's the point and just an unavoidable part of the process or if I'm just misunderstanding you

i mean that saying "i have no artistic skills" is a flinch against growth. if you don't want to focus on visual art as part of your creative process, that's a completely valid decision; however, writing off the process because you're "naturally bad at it" (as i have seen many people say) just means you'll never have the chance to surprise yourself. creating earnestly means letting yourself be kinda bad at things. game development is a synthesis of visual art, foley work, music composition, animation, 3d modeling, architecture, narrative design, and yes, programming; being a hobbyist developer (and thus, likely a solo developer) means you have to handle many of these on your own. you may not be technically proficient at painting, but you need to find your own good-enough setup in order to create work you're satisfied with.

painting is visual art; pixel art is visual art; level design is visual art; tech art is visual art; animation is visual art; 3d modeling is visual art; ui design is visual art; ascii art is visual art; putting text on a black screen is visual art; leaving the screen dark is visual art. these skillsets are all connected by the eye. eventually you will have to contend with your own aesthetic sensibilities; the sooner you confront what you want and discover how you are capable of achieving it, the better off you will be.
