I don't have a title for this one and I don't mess with bird app any more but Shoutouts to someone I follow there still for being real about a big problem I have with a lot of fighting game videos and certain attitudes in the space, specifically the practice of deriding characters for being easy enough for cavemen to play.
Put simply for people who don't know the score: some characters, like Elphelt in Guilty Gear, have a reputation much like the GEICO commercial I'm vaguely referencing. Specifically the idea that anyone can just pick up buttons, do whatever, and clown their way to victory without even learning.
I'm not so arrogant as to say I never had that stage in my fighting game experience, but it's one of the worst things you can let settle in your mind (there's another one that I saw recently repeated in a Discord so many times that it has been the #1 thing to get people banned there, but I'm going to put that in the drafts for later).
Put simply, as much as I don't subscribe to the "you're just making up excuses" school of thought for most subjects anymore, mostly because it's frequently used to shame people who have executive dysfunction—this is one of those times where no, it is in fact just making up excuses.
When you're playing a fighting game you have to accept that it is your job to figure out what your opponent's game plan is and do something about it. If you can't do something about it, then that's just a matchup you have to learn. How do you learn it? That's up to you, but part of it is going to be playing that matchup whether you like it or not.
I jokingly said on stream that I was upset they made Elphelt so cool in Guilty Gear Strive because I used to hate fighting against Elphelt in Xrd (#JamSuffering) and didn't have an interest in using her, but her Strive rework lines up her aesthetic and playstyle in a way I really like! So I betrayed doggo lady and color guard guy for gun rekkas.
But in all seriousness: use who you like. Don't make other people's insecurities the reason you hold yourself back from enjoying yourself. If they can't beat your character, they can hit the lab or hit the bricks. It's pretty much what it is. Everyone has the same character select screen in most games, and if you don't (read: it's DLC characters you didn't/couldn't buy, which, fair point, that's rough), then you can find a way to find someone that will help you work around that problem.
