I'm a Vietnamese cis woman born and currently living in the U.S. You may know me from Sandwich, from Twitter or Mastodon (same username), or on Twitch as Sharkaeopteryx. I do not have a Discord or Bluesky account.

Ask me about language learning/teaching, cooking/eating food, late diagnosis ADHD, and volunteer small business mentoring. Or don't, I'm not the boss of you.

I think people deserve to be young, make mistakes, and grow without being held to standards they don't know about yet and are still learning. So, if you are under 22, please don't try to strike up a friendship or get involved in discussions on my posts.

Please don't automatically assume I follow/know/co-sign someone just because I reposted something from them—sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Also, if you think being removed as a follower when we're not mutuals is a cardinal sin, please do not follow me.

consistently the absolute funniest thing abt doing a technical writing program is being introduced to Tech World Stuff. Hello computer employee. This is an empathy map. It helps you remember that the people who use your thing are people with feelings & thoughts. It's like if you looked at a person & imagined that they have an interior life, on top of just using your app! i've had to Make Personas in i think three different classes so far. silly cone galley is out here making up guys & saying that's business!!! they're writing 15000 articles about the economic benefits of making up a guy who might use your industry disruptive website for Dog Surfing & i have to read all of them & they're like!!!! ooooh this is business this is tech!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is so important & real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! these are my VERY IMPORTANT BUSINESS OCS DO NOT STEAL.. EVERYONE COME IN TO THE "MEETING".WHERE I WILL SHOW YOU PICTURES OF MY BUSINESS OCS... WE CAN DO A JOURNEY MAP FOR THEM... maybe think abt which buttons they would clikc.... ans when...... wouldn't that be nice............ life could be but a dream..

in reply to @sitcom's post:

i had to do this at my internship and it was so silly because i was like "person who needs the software to be easy to use" and they were like "no they need to have a job and personality and stuff" it was so silly

it’s because they went straight out of college (fake made up world freemium game) into offices (stressful but incredibly alienated from reality where all problems are fake like being held captive by some godlike alien in a star trek episode who turns out to be someone’s bratty space child) and thus can no longer relate to any normal human much like a VN character trapped in their millionth time loop

they’re not dead but they’re not living either. every day i have to fight the urge to turn into one of them. it’s so so hard to finally “make it” and have that turn out to be one of the worst things to happen in a slow way.

this shit feels like the ending of Utena

sorry i’m a project manager so im literally the one having to make the funny paper dolls so people can understand how to collectively move a task along. meanwhile i remember getting screamed at by sous chefs

it’s not like i miss it but once you’ve seen the human capacity to Get Shit done and you see your millionth dollar burned on someone’s half baked plan to reach an imaginary goal it just really fucks with you when you remember struggling just to get two dollars

in reply to @sitcom's post:

it’s 2024. every job that isn’t a “real job” is things that are actually essential to society. every “real job” is showing up to an office to get paid eight hours wages to spend an hour typing into a spreadsheet and maybe go to a meeting or two

i love that i can either work in e-waste in the bay area and make $29,000 doing something extremely useful and helping hundreds of people a month, or go work in tech in the bay area and make $229,000 for a job which requires no manual labor and, at best, annoys hundreds of thousands of people a month

You sure will. I work as an estimator for construction, so in a way I'm fairly close to ground level... but in another way by the time I get involved there's already someone who needs something and someone who can do that thing talking to each other and I'm simply determining what amount of green paper should be exchanged

This is unnecessary. No one who actually needs anything should be the one paying for it. That's absurd. Yes, you have needs so you must be charged for them. There's plenty of people who need nothing and pay for nothing, what sense is that?

I can at least be proud I charge less than market rate for this unnecessary service...not that that's helping my needs

the worst part of personas is being asked to make personas instead of doing the actual useful things like interviewing/observing people use stuff. if you just make personas you don't need any of that stuff i guess!!!!

this is the funniest part to me!! like, one of the classes was like "do user research then synthesis it into a persona" & i was like, fair enough. but sometimes it's literally just "who do you think is out there :3" & i'm like "uhhh i think this is a person who coincidentally wants a website to be exactly what i want it to be, that's my persona, are we good"

you have nothing to apologize for: foodservice workers are braver than the troops. probably more likely to catch a bullet lately too.

I get paid six figures a year to make interacting with the DMV worse, and every day I think about how if my body weren't broken, I'd get an honest job flipping burgers in a heartbeat.

mighty agree, i genuinely miss working in food service compared to the tech jobs i've had because i got an actual !!good feeling!! from feeding people food (i delivered pizza for several years, usually late into the night). handing over some nice hot pizza to a tired parent at 9:30 pm or a stoner at 1:00 am was always the greatest feeling in the world. i really miss it. if i can secure a more reliable car, i probably will go back.

I am sad that I know exactly what you are talking about in both the first chost and the second chost, and I feel for you. You are right that it is all stupid and feels ridiculous and is infinitely less important than making somebody food. (Which might be why I spend so much of my free time cooking.)

For what it's worth, making up little guys is necessary because--as wild as it is--people get so obsessed with making a thing that they forget all the time they are making a thing for people, and they wind up making a thing for the sake of making a thing. Here, this team of 50 people spent three months and a million dollars making this, it's a beautiful little box full of gears and pulleys that is always closed, isn't it neat, it meets all the goals and closes all the tickets and ticks all the boxes. What does it do? Wrong question.
