I'm a Vietnamese cis woman born and currently living in the U.S. You may know me from Sandwich, from Twitter or Mastodon (same username), or on Twitch as Sharkaeopteryx. I do not have a Discord or Bluesky account.

Ask me about language learning/teaching, cooking/eating food, late diagnosis ADHD, and volunteer small business mentoring. Or don't, I'm not the boss of you.

I think people deserve to be young, make mistakes, and grow without being held to standards they don't know about yet and are still learning. So, if you are under 22, please don't try to strike up a friendship or get involved in discussions on my posts.

Please don't automatically assume I follow/know/co-sign someone just because I reposted something from them—sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Also, if you think being removed as a follower when we're not mutuals is a cardinal sin, please do not follow me.

@MintyWyvern

I know it's not their fault and they have their own valid reasons for doing so but

man

It makes me a little sad whenever I talk to friends and they talk about things in terms of "this makes good content" "this doesn't make good content" "I know I like __ but content wise it's not great so I should do __"

idk, I think it's just bc they're looking at streaming/video making as something they'd like to do full time instead of doing their shitty day job hours, and I get it but it also makes me feel a little like..... I dunno

I guess a little bit sad?

A lot of my friends are creatives, they draw, they 3d model, they program things, make music, etc. I think it's really cool to see what everyone is up to. Hell I love streaming and watching my friends stream bc its kind of nice to see them gush about upcoming projects or ideas

but it also makes me feel sad that a lot of stuff is for he sake of "content" rather than bc "hey wouldn't it be cool if I did _"

Even some of the most creative ideas i've seen from my friends will sometimes still turn into "content", like, they'll have a really neat idea that I've never seen before and they'll end the basic idea of their project with "no one makes content like this, so that can by my thing" and im like

man I dunno

if you think it's cool you should just do it even if others do it already.

I dunno, I just want a world where my friends don't need to think of their ideas as only "content" or only worth doing if it can be used for "content" it's a little disheartening orrz

in reply to @MintyWyvern's post:

I totally feel this, only bc I've had similar thoughts myself, especially after working for a vtuber company. Helping someone improve their content in a way that also boosts their metrics means I had to understand what audiences find appealing, what's trending, etc. so I'm forever cursed with viewing content creation through that lens.

a lot of creative people nowadays do this and get misguided into thinking what they create is only worthwhile if it's "unique", as if it has to be something no one's ever seen before, not realizing that it's already unique simply because they're the ones doing it. e.g. millions of people have played Dark Souls, but it's still your first time playing it, and people will show up for that!

edit bc i hit post by accident: if you're worried about your friends, def talk to them about it! they will appreciate your feedback and sincerity :eggbug-smile-hearts:

I wish doing stuff online wasn't this way bc then i feel like we'd get more cool stuff from people but ahhh it it what it is ;;;

Hopefully me cheering them on and telling them to just for it when it comes to their ideas is enough to get them to work on stuff as unhindered as possible.
