I'm a Vietnamese cis woman born and currently living in the U.S. You may know me from Sandwich, from Twitter or Mastodon (same username), or on Twitch as Sharkaeopteryx. I do not have a Discord or Bluesky account.

Ask me about language learning/teaching, cooking/eating food, late diagnosis ADHD, and volunteer small business mentoring. Or don't, I'm not the boss of you.

I think people deserve to be young, make mistakes, and grow without being held to standards they don't know about yet and are still learning. So, if you are under 22, please don't try to strike up a friendship or get involved in discussions on my posts.

Please don't automatically assume I follow/know/co-sign someone just because I reposted something from them—sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Also, if you think being removed as a follower when we're not mutuals is a cardinal sin, please do not follow me.

This isn't super intuitive or really mentioned when you block them so, this is a PSA (or if you already knew, a reminder/news to people other than you). It doesn't show up on the info page for blocking but it is in support documentation, by which I mean I saw a user-generated response about it on the support site.

Edited for clarity: Blocking does stop them from continuing to comment or to create other notifications for you—it simply doesn't hide notifications that they triggered before you blocked them. So let's say you get a notification that someone commented on a post, you see that it's rank, so you block them. Now, they can't continue to be grody, but you'll still see the full text of their initial rancidity every time you click on notifications until either the notification ages out or until you silence them in addition to blocking them.

To be clear, I do wish it either worked intuitively, was signposted when you block someone, or at the very least mention made on the help page for blocking, BUT I'm NOT attacking the devs about this. I am just sharing something I'm sure many other people have also shared many times, because I myself literally only just learned today.
Do not start discourse about this, I swear to fucking bug

I'm not going to hide safety tips for the same reason nobody hides the fire extinguisher when you enter a new place. But this is really for information more than anything else. Don't be too scared; part of the reason it took me so long to learn this is because I hadn't had to block actual people much since I got here (in 2022? 2023? Idk. When Twitter sold).

You must log in to comment.

in reply to @sharksonaplane's post:

Yep, I thought the same! To be clear, this is only for notifications from them that showed up before you block them.

So in my case, a new follower posted a rancid comment on something I reposted and as soon as I saw the notification I blocked them. They weren't able to continue commenting, but the notification for their comment (which included the text of said rancid comment) kept showing up on my notifications page until I learned to Silence them as well, whereupon it finally disappeared.

OHHHHH I see, yeah that makes sense. I was a little confused thinking they were still interacting with the post somehow which, being used to tumblr where blocking basically didn't work at points, I was prepared to accept as something that should be fixed at some point.
