The workers at Oregon Public Broadcasting and its fellow station KMHD Jazz Radio 89.1 have opted to unionize! Earlier this week approximately 80% of the staff across both signed onto a petition announcing the formation of a union and demanding voluntary recognition from OPB leadership. This union would likely cover over 200 people, and reportedly would include "on-air staff, hosts, reporters[,] and digital audio and video producers"
Interestingly, they have not chosen to unionize with Newsguild (and therefore CWA) as most publications and journalistic outfits tend to. Instead, if recognized (or if they win their election), they'll be joining SAG-AFTRA, who put out a press release supporting the union shortly after its announcement.
As of writing, OPB leadership has not publicly committed to recognizing or not recognizing the union, but such a commitment should be forthcoming,
