The fish doorbell has been around for a couple years now, so I figure people are going to tell me they already know about it, but I found out about this tonight and I…might be a little eager to share this around.
It's a virtual doorbell you can press when you see a migrating fish show up on the webcam. When there are enough fish, a locks employee in Utrecht, Netherlands (where the boat lock is located) starts cranking a giant wheel (no metaphor) to open the door and let the fish through so they can continue on their way.
During migration season, an ecologist who helped develop the program gives weekly "Fish Doorbell News Reports" on YouTube (Dutch w/Eng subs).
idk, the water is blurry due to sediment right now but some of the pics in clearer water are neat. i know it doesn't solve the problem entirely but it is cute. we can have a little incremental dollop of good progress, as a treat.
