I'm a Vietnamese cis woman born and currently living in the U.S. You may know me from Sandwich, from Twitter or Mastodon (same username), or on Twitch as Sharkaeopteryx. I do not have a Discord or Bluesky account.

Ask me about language learning/teaching, cooking/eating food, late diagnosis ADHD, and volunteer small business mentoring. Or don't, I'm not the boss of you.

I think people deserve to be young, make mistakes, and grow without being held to standards they don't know about yet and are still learning. So, if you are under 22, please don't try to strike up a friendship or get involved in discussions on my posts.

Please don't automatically assume I follow/know/co-sign someone just because I reposted something from them—sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Also, if you think being removed as a follower when we're not mutuals is a cardinal sin, please do not follow me.

Saw some dude go into a wild tangent over a scenario that only exists in his head about the whole "pedestrians needing to grab a brick to cross the road" post that has been going on ("But what about MY safety while driving a murder machine???") right before blocking them, and I have to believe that this brand of driver psychopathy is exclusive to the northern hemisphere or something

I remember a few sessions ago I was trying to explain something during a game and told the others "You know how pedestrians always have the right of way?" to set a baseline to what I was going to say later about mechs, but instead was met with several "huh????", having to say that yes, when you're driving a 2 ton death machine, the fragile meat and bone person will always have the right of the way

Guess this is the difference of mindset you get when you say crossing the street is illegal instead

I mostly think about this 2020 study that found people that drive nicer cars are worse drivers and then if you live in the US it's even worse cuz so much revoles around having a car even if you dont need a car to get around it still creates a 1st and 2nd class citizen dichotomy.

My favorite demonstration of US car culture is when someone on the birdsite posted a video of the stuntman minigame from Infinite Wealth, and some QT'd with "this is just what it's like to walk anywhere in America"

And they're not wrong.

in reply to @Adell's post:

its such an absurdly bafflingly simple concept to NOT be universal, and yet I keep seeing people going "Well, what about the damage to my car???" what about KILLING SOMEONE holy crap

every time some asshole drives straight into a bollard protecting a bike lane or something, there's endless comments on how bollards are dangerous and this is why... and like... you'd rather ram into a cyclist instead???

I had to see that post too. The last time I saw a comment that unhinged about whether pedestrians deserve to die, it was on the comments section of a local newspaper web site.

Do we have local newspaper comment section refugees now on Cohost

in reply to @TrashBoatDaGod's post:

There's a train of thought that focuses only on the material force when cars are involved, like might makes right of way.

Sure I have a yield sign, but if I speed up right before, no one will want to risk the collision and let me through.

Sure it's a crosswalk, but if I don't slow down the pedestrians will not dare oppose me because they'll lose.

Sure it's a lane change, but my car is so big that people in my blind spot will get out of the way no matter what.

These all ignore the actual concept that is "right of way". But when you drive in and out of work everyday for years, there's no one to tell you you're wrong. It sucks
