“This repression is a side effect of the levels of Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism in Germany. It's important to continue to highlight that this is not really a repression of Irish culture. It's the repression of Irish solidarity with Palestine.
Further context now that I read the article:
- The Berlin police have banned speech unless it is in English or German, or there is a translator on hand to tell the police what is being said, so that they know what to censor (!)
- Irish people living in Berlin realized they could use their country's intense language pride to bring attention to this issue
- It's 100% going to work
Thinking about other EU member states with comparable cultural ties to protecting their language, I think someone should try this in French.
