I'm a Vietnamese cis woman born and currently living in the U.S. You may know me from Sandwich, from Twitter or Mastodon (same username), or on Twitch as Sharkaeopteryx. I do not have a Discord or Bluesky account.

Ask me about language learning/teaching, cooking/eating food, late diagnosis ADHD, and volunteer small business mentoring. Or don't, I'm not the boss of you.

I think people deserve to be young, make mistakes, and grow without being held to standards they don't know about yet and are still learning. So, if you are under 22, please don't try to strike up a friendship or get involved in discussions on my posts.

Please don't automatically assume I follow/know/co-sign someone just because I reposted something from them—sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Also, if you think being removed as a follower when we're not mutuals is a cardinal sin, please do not follow me.

How do you manage which fonts would be good for which kidn of project/feeling? I mostly do graphic design for memes, but I still feel lost when trying to find a fitting font, and I'll either waste time checking through all of mine to check or just leaning on one of my five favorites. Do you use a document or something? or have you just built an encyclopedic knowledge of fonts from experience like my grandfather?

in reply to @TrashBoatDaGod's post:

i try to sort by serif and sans to start out with, but after that i usually end up clicking to a random part of my Big List to start with. after that i'll put several fonts next to each other (ie copy the text box and change the font on each one) and usually once i see them next to each other i can go aHA that one! and pick a favorite

For games, which is my realm, there are specific prerequisites that we look for in fonts for it to be viable towards the end product. Apologies if this is too inside baseball! I know I usually want 2 fonts, a body and a header, so I'm on the lookout for at least 2 that will mesh well.

The project typically dictates whether I want a serif or sans serif. I will then find a handful kind of just based on vibes that match with the tone and high level art direction that's established. I might pick some for specific characteristics, whether I really like the numbers or the aesthetic of the characters themselves. I'll plug them into mockups and deduce from there. I'll try the font combinations I had in mind initially as I started picking them, and then I'll try lineups where I mix everything up just to see if maybe I like certain combinations more. Major factors that might help narrow the field might be its support for a wide variety of characters and languages, and also multiple weight options.

Maybe there's a font you find that looks really good in English but has no supporting characters for other languages. You can alter some fonts to include characters but it's a time and budget scenario - it would take more time and maybe more money in the long run to adjust or add to a font family to suit your needs than finding something more turn key from a foundry that's more expensive upfront.

Also for accessibility concerns, some fonts might get ruled out for being too abstract, artistic, or for some characters looking too similar to each other.

not a graphic designer (We mostly did posters for our political org) but I keep a 'font palette' of just a lot of fonts next to each other in a document, same way I keep my little icons and stuff in their own file and just slice and dice it
