I'm a Vietnamese cis woman born and currently living in the U.S. You may know me from Sandwich, from Twitter or Mastodon (same username), or on Twitch as Sharkaeopteryx. I do not have a Discord or Bluesky account.

Ask me about language learning/teaching, cooking/eating food, late diagnosis ADHD, and volunteer small business mentoring. Or don't, I'm not the boss of you.

I think people deserve to be young, make mistakes, and grow without being held to standards they don't know about yet and are still learning. So, if you are under 22, please don't try to strike up a friendship or get involved in discussions on my posts.

Please don't automatically assume I follow/know/co-sign someone just because I reposted something from them—sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Also, if you think being removed as a follower when we're not mutuals is a cardinal sin, please do not follow me.

i sometimes think about the people who will go “please buy indie games” or “go unionize” as if that will console the people who just got laid off.

and it makes me think these kinds of platitudes are just meant to help folks cope with the fact fans, journalists, and commentators don’t have any power against capital. they need to say something positive, something nice.

but i guess when all you have is stuff like this, it just feels like you’re telling yourself that you are trying to be an ethical consumer. nothing that helpful to the worker who lost everything.

of course, nobody likes to feel powerless and everybody hates the fact that all they can likely do is boost the workers’ portfolios and donate to fundraisers. but i do think it’s better to accept the grim reality that Capitalism is violent than say, “I’m gonna buy an indie game this time round.”

it’s okay to feel glum. there’s just no sugarcoating it. you can buy indie games if you wish, but don’t do it out of an obligation to “help” displaced workers. the worst case scenario has already happened, all we can do is watch out for each other and help out as much as we can.

in reply to @austin's post:

Recently saw a radioactively bad take on unionizing: "I, game critic, may make up my own stingy 1-10 scale to rate a game even though I know it'll get fed into Metacritic; I owe nothing to game devs - if they don't like being judged based on Metacritic scores they can go unionize about it."

It may or may not be possible to be an ethical consumer, but it sure as fuck is possible to be an unethical consumer, so uh please don't be one. We live in a society. This is not a high bar to clear.

Feel like there's a correlation between my being disabled (long haul), the endless platitudes (and unresearched facebook posts thrown at me) and those sentiments. It's all well and good, but It'd be great if the US had a working disability system... or social security net... or anything.
