the game of the moment among quite a few of my JP pals: LUNLUN SUPERHEROBABYS DX, an enhanced commercial version of a free Action Game Tsukuru/Pixel Game Maker MV game that made its way to the Switch eShop earlier this year:
Specifically, this game has peoples' attention due to an interview with the game's developer, Yukimi, that went up on denfami today—this game was advertised as being the debut work of a mother of six children who wanted to make something to entertain all her kids, so that part wasn't news, but people were taken aback by just how little experience she had going in, just based on the quality of the game: her career has nothing to do with games or coding or graphic design or any of the disciplines you'd expect; she's not an especially fanatical player and has zero training or education as an artist, and the game was made by her pecking away for a couple hours every night on a couple of cheap laptops, including one still rocking Vista. She didn't even have a desk or chair—she worked on the floor with her computer/s propped up on a storage box, after relocating from the kitchen in order to keep from getting in the way (and to keep oil from spraying onto her laptop).
Yukimi says she made the game in ~400 hours, so to make it so far with zero experience and no assistance beyond youtube tutorials is quite remarkable and, one would hope, encouraging to those who find indie dev a daunting prospect... of course, the response has been split pretty evenly between those who feel inspired, and those who can't help but compare how much she accomplished on a whim vs. however much they've achieved after putting in immeasurably more time, effort and money, and I can't say I don't sympathise.
