what happens if you use those patterns against the goats you got them from?
It depends on if they can take what they dish out! Some goats operate on an assumption that others want basically the same thing as them, and their maladaptive techniques actually work very well when used back against them. Others assume that they're fundamentally different from others, for reasons either cruel or kind, and as a result don't want to be interacted with in the same way they talk to others.

The reason for yawning is to signal to others that you're ready to sleep and when there are enough people yawning the assumption is everyone is safe and yeah we could just sleep now and save some energy. That's why it's "contagious". It's a quick way of polling the group; not also yawning means you feel unsafe enough to override your yawn reflex.
