Corsi-Rosenthal boxes are probably the most cost-effective, highest-volume air purifiers that you can easily access. They're homemade, out of four commodity MERV13 HVAC filters and a ducted box fan. Once assembled, they last a very long time, and you just rebuild everything but the fan assembly when it's time to replace it. I'd recommend using blue tape to attach the box fan and shroud, for when you have to build a new one and swap the fan back in.
