The thing about John Crichton at least in season 1 so far is that he's a Gary Stu audience insert who doesn't really have a lot of distinct characteristics or things he needs to grow through because every male white dweeb is supposed to project onto him and being too specific would make that difficult. And he's just The Hero and he Figures Things Out or Tells Other Characters What to Do or How to Be Sensible or Grow. He's the Agent, the Player, and the characters are playthings who change in response to him.

So far almost every time in season 1 that John has a Moment with another character where he saves or something I always think it would have been a more Interesting story if one of the other characters had filled his role. Because all the other characters have really complicated and interesting dynamics with each other. But with John they all have the same dynamic.

I'm still really enjoying the show quite a lot I just need John to be decentered or complicated or weakened
