why does everyone say they have ADHD and autism these days?????
i remember noticing this phenomenon years ago back on tumblr - i jokingly call it 'cargo cult autism' because of the way some people treated autism as like, this twee quirky aesthetic of slime gifs and not a disability that literally fucks you up from childhood because of how other people treated you for the crime of being varying degrees of misprinted from their concept of a 'normal' person/child unless you grew up with unicorn parents and had unicorn teachers and unicorn classmates and unicorn coworkers, relatives, etc etc etc
and this is with the recognition that autism/adhd are criminally underdiagnosed in afab people. i don't like the idea of gatekeeping neurodiversity (especially because adult diagnosis for adhd/autism costs Ridiculous Money and isn't always covered by insurance) but it also goes far beyond one's social media habits. idk
my point was more that websites that are appealing to neurodivergent people will attract a greater proportion of neurodivergent people than there are in the general population
so people who get their ideas about "what everyone is saying" from social media will see a large percentage of people talking about being neurodivergent, then think "well it can't possibly be that many so some of them are lying"
oh that makes a lot more sense, thank you for clarifying
i never even thought about it like that, i was interpreting more along the lines of 'social media is inherently isolating and designed to get you addicted to scrolling so it's easy for someone to convince themself that using tiktok a lot means they're autistic'
but no yeah i agree with you on that point
