Masks are not required to shop inside our store unless required by state law or local ordinances.

something about this sign is quintessentially American to me.

first of all, it's long outlived its practical usefulness -- the brief moment in time where it was unclear whether businesses cared about members of the public transmitting disease to their employees or other customers. (answer: a resounding no.)

second of all, it's about a crime you may or may not currently be committing.

third of all, it's incredibly unhelpful and tells you only slightly more than nothing. are you committing that crime? who knows. do your own research.

fourth of all, its actual purpose is to keep people from harassing service workers over something they wouldn't have the power to change anyway.
