It was a very straight romance movie. I really liked how it took place in Singapore which is a country most Americans don't know anything about and is a very fascinating and interesting place that has really cool architecture. It had not just one but two gay best friend characters who serve as the fairy godmothers that enable Rachel to magically transform into a princess for the big rich people events. I liked the gay characters they were fun though not really people so much as whimsical fairies.
I liked Rachel's mom and I liked Rachel in general and the way that she wins in the end is clever and satisfying. The women in this movie were generally great. Nick was not a very compelling love interest and his money really did seem like the only reason to stay with him there wasn't enough screen time where we see that Rachel and Nick are actually in love enough to justify getting married after only one year.
Astrid's subplot felt thematically unrelated to the rest of the story and it had no impact on anything else really. Also it was all about Astrid.... Feeling good about buying million dollar earrings? Like yes it's not on her that her husband felt inadequate but "be proud of your luxurious wasteful spending" felt like a weird thing to end on. At no point does anyone ever suggest in this movie that anyone should use this money to help people. The lavish engagement party is portrayed as good even though it is very wasteful. Symbolism felt muddled.
Fun movie though I enjoyed it
