Alright! Almost got it all working again. Only some very minor issues remain, should be able to get those figured out tomorrow.
Okey, got everything running now, and the fantastic news is that not only is the new system conceptually and concretely easier to deal with, it also boosted the framerate by a factor of about 4 on my own system.
