literal and metaphorical. "A Thousand Ways of Seeing a Forest" by Jacob Geller just keeps rebounding off other ideas in my head. one of the things that just occurred to me (which would normally just go into my notes app and then get ignored but i felt like sharing) is that just baseline translating between languages is difficult at best and hard-to-impossible at worse. it's the kind of thing that makes you question cognition and perception. given that difficulty with the plain literal act of translation, why would anyone think that expertise can translate? and yet we have so many people in life that think their particular experience in their discipline translates to making them some sort of "omnidisciplinary Science Expert"
