learned that helldivers 2 is basically just paul verhoeven's starship troopers but less cerebral and like........ is that still useful? I get that 1997 was a bit ago and new people are growing up constantly but is satire any good if it's so stale
feels like maybe at some point people should move past "haha this is so ridiculous it's obvious america bad". like a sequel to that satire requires a clarity of purpose shirt guy that's all maybe you should just not make a fascist's fantasies become real and also put in some funny lines and loading screen tooltips so everyone knows you're winking at the camera
I've been playing a lot of helldivers because I love a goofy co-op shooting game but this facet of it is pretty painful. Like, it's not even as strong a satire as Starship Troopers (a nearly 30-year-old film.) At what point are the satirical elements here really just the devs going "ok we all know war and fascism are bad or whatever BUT check out this cool explosion"
