At The Mountains of Madness by Lovecraft except it's a guy exploring a fan wiki and getting real freaked out by each new wiki page

y'know it'd be kinda funny to write a sequel to "At the Mountains of Madness" by Lovecraft where an archaeologist from a modern perspective rips the findings apart for being unscientific and making out a bunch of murals to be literal recountings of actual history

like "the author took a carving of a flying barrel on a background of star symbols as evidence that the Leng peoples literally physically flew through space with their wings, which (though obviously unnecessary) we have long since disproven by discovery of the now-commonly-understood space worthy vessels amongst the Leng ruins that were excavated on a return expedition a scant few years after"
