i swear, reading about "threads" by metafacebook and the promise of federation, it's like "the hope is to one day be able to see posts from one service on another service", as if linking and embeds do not exist and the internet is somehow not a thing.

idk, the things people want from the "modern web" makes me feel like either they don't understand how the internet works or i don't



is it just me or is the fediverse stuff just "what if everyone could make a website, but we shuffle the cost to host around somehow"

like it's just a miniature, weirdly moderated and gardened version of the traditional web, yes? are we just continually reinventing the web in the hopes that if we just do it again but with different proper nouns and sign up processes, it'll work good this time?
