tabletop rpg obsessed, particularly lancer, icon, cain, the treacherous turn, eclipse phase, and pathfinder 2e. also a fan of the elder scrolls and star wars, an avid gamer and reader of webcomics, and when my brain cooperates, a hobbyist writer.

the urge to share my creations versus the horrifying ordeal of being perceived. fight of the millennium. anyway posts about my ocs are tagged with "mal's ocs" (minus the quotes). posts about or containing my writing are tagged with "mal's writing" (again, sans quotes). posts about my sci-fi setting specifically are tagged "the eating of names". i'd pin the latter two if they were actually among my top 15 most used tags lol. fair warning, my writing tends to be quite dark and deal with some heavy themes.

avatar is a much more humanoid depiction of my OC Arwen Tachht than is strictly accurate, made in this Picrew. (I have humanoidsonas for my non-humanoid OCs because I cannot draw them myself and must rely on dollmakers and such, hooray chronic pain)

It's really fucked how companies in this industry can just baldfacely lie about what they're doing and everyone just goes with it. Like, no, Humble is not 'restructuring', and no, ongoing projects signed with them will not be unaffected, and to make those claims is just... lying to our faces about it. But there's no public pushback whatsoever.

I think the main problem is that there's no one left to do the pushing back. Who's supposed to investigate these bullshit claims? The games journalist pushing out twenty listicles and guides a day until they're replaced with AI slop? Or the TikTok personality who's looking for the next game to get angry about so they can sell more Angry Dave merch?

In a broad sense, yeah, but I really don't understand how we seemingly lost the capacity to push back even on obvious lying in the open like this. Nobody needs to 'investigate' to come to the conclusion that Ziff Davis is lying when they call firing the entire Humble publishing staff a 'restructuring', or when they claim that it won't affect ongoing publishing deals. Those kinds of statements are just obviously, facially not true.

in reply to @bruno's post:

oh. these guys.

they’re a small “consultancy” out of a state with not so great pay and labor regs, just saw them hiring and their team seems very small and the listing avoided many things required nowadays for remote roles. so it implies they don’t even have the manpower to take on this project. It’s the same team iirc that has used the indie game business discord to promote / advertise their existence everywhere, whose only actual owners i know of are just the two most boring dudes in the south you could think of who seem to just try to siphon up any indie games development discussion

wages low and labor protections even lower, this is just ziff davis doing everything they can to cut corners and hand this off to people much less qualifi than the in house humble team

actually ok i’m not going to speculate so this is just fiction at this point but:

look, the south does not have a great track record for queer acceptance of late and i have no idea what these guys politics are, but i think handing the fate and working relationships of a ton of small queer devs who often lack business literacy to some (making a lot of assumptions here!!) yet-to-be-seen-otherwise cis business dudes with Mystery Leanings doesn’t make me feel very good!!

humble already had a mixed reputation depending on whom you talked to in terms of how good they were to work with, this just makes that existing problem worse and adds new ones

additionally, i am very skeptical of consultants coming in and adding any value whatsoever. how do we know they can deliver on what a 36 person team couldn’t at a lower cost?
