Down at the rotary
Sitting in a punch bowl
Here comes the cavalry
Tie them to a bean pole
Lock up your soda bread
Underneath the bear trap
Establishing a beachhead
With an old gingersnap
Hide at the bakery
Eat all the bread you see
How many biscuits will you eat?
One
Two
Three
...
It sounds vaguely medieval to me, describing children hiding from a foraging army, but at the same time I think the term "rotary" as a place is a relatively modern term and unique to New England, and "beachhead" also seems relatively modern?
Yet more evidence that children perform a valuable service by preserving terrifying cultural memories through inane rhymes
