This is take 2 on the grafting. We are trying to turn our apple tree into a 7 in 1 tree. For reasons I don't fully understand, when you properly graft a branch from tree A onto tree B, the branch remembers that it makes apple A, even though it's on tree B. So you get two apples on one tree.

We're repeating that 6 times.

Last year the grafts unfortunately didn't take. I talked to an expert and she said we did it too late. I'm hoping that making the grafts a month earlier will work but I'm worried with how warm the winter has been that it's still too late.

Here's hoping!

The mother tree is a red delicious, but I'm using it just for its branches. The varieties I'm grafting on are:

  • Cox's Orange Pippin
  • Macintosh
  • Arkansas Black
  • Ginger Gold
  • Rhode Island Greening
  • Roxbury Russet (first apple grown in North America!)

As for future varieties, I don't have anything planned right now? I am waiting for success before going crazy planning. I would like to get things that are both rare and interesting. A couple that are on my watch list are the Lamb Abbey Pearmain (really tasty but small) and the Api Etoille (a lumpy star shaped apple that was historically used in displays because it was so pretty)
