It's hard to choose a favorite but here's three fun ones, in order of (I think) availability:
-
Lamb Abbey Pearmain — According to legend, this was discovered on the grounds of Lamb Abbey, somewhere in England. It's a tiny little apple that is dense with sweet flavor. If you can manage to find them, they are a really fun little treat and especially fun to hand out.
-
Cox's Orange Pippin — I believe this is the grandmother of the Honeycrisp apple, and you can tell. It's not quite as crisp as the Honeycrisp but more than makes up for that with flavor, and I mean real flavor, not just sweetness. It's popular enough among apple enthusiasts that at least some pick-your-own orchards will grow it if you're in an area where those exist. You can also maybe get them online during the harvesting season.
-
Aksu — This is a weird apple. It's crisp, with an incredibly delicate flavor. The best way that I can explain it is to imagine a small, natural pool of pure, enchanted water that heals and relaxes you when you drink it. Then imagine an apple tree growing out of the pool. What kind of fruit would arise from such pure nourishment? It's this one.
