Setting up your own email where you actually run the server: 20 years ago, it was possible but not worth the stress.

Now, it's basically impossible: Gmail will probably consider your outgoing email to be spam, even if you follow every rule, and if you can't send email to Gmail you can't send email.

On the other hand, having a custom domain name on someone else's email server: not too hard. I use fastmail.com for this and I like it. It costs $5/month but it's great. They live up to the domain name reasonably well because they have a web interface that isn't sluggish like gmail is.

Gmail and Outlook have services for custom domains, but they require you to pretend to be, or actually be, a business, and Gmail will fuck up your whole digital life if you ever stop paying for it after you start.
