The idea of Jerome Jacinto's work being AI isn't something that needs debunking, but it made me think about how cool his workflow was for his two Small Saga commissions, so I thought I'd share that. I asked his permission, of course.
After giving him some references - most notably an iconic panel from Berserk - he started by sketching some thumbnails to work out the composition and poses (1). He then blocked out lighting (2) and did some basic lineart (3).
Then there was the matter of colour - he gave me a few options (4, 5). I really like the dramatic spookiness of 4, but we both agreed that warm lighting better represented the scene from the game (6). Then it was just a matter of rendering, with some back-and-forth over lighting details (7).
Great artist! Very professional. Would work with again.
