I actually worked for Cycorp for a while back in the early 2000s, as a sysadmin and not as an ontologist, so seeing anyone mention Cyc is always a weird sensation
those kinds of expert systems require specific human expertise to implement, and capitalism prefers things you can throw money at that aren't smart people and all their messy requirements (i.e. more hardware)
also, if something goes wrong in a system with a crafted ontology, such as the expression of a bias, you can track down what happened and figure out what caused it. capitalism prefers systems where no blame can be laid at the hand of any decision-maker, and where management can refuse to fix it because it was the result of an automated process, re: LLMs and "the algorithm"

yeah, i've long thought a furry art site would work really well if it had this sort of setup! i didn't know there was a term for it tho and that it was an established technique, so the best i could do is a clunky description of what i mean lol
