I find it kind of fascinating that I’ve seen a few different people suggest “why not try pillowfort” on different sites but not a single person actually acknowledges the specific reason why cohost users are uncomfortable with them. Like maybe it’s just that the specific clique is so small other people aren’t aware of them but I’d rather one of the pillowfort boosters at least recognize there’s a reason people are uncomfortable and address it. Maybe tell me it’s not representative of the site culture, maybe tell me there’s good chain blocking tools so I can just banish that entire group before I start using the site. But preferably not just pretend it didn’t happen

in reply to @dog's post:

as a more fundamental problem i do not think i actually know anyone who uses pillowfort. so the people doing commentary from a distance are the vast majority of the website population, as far as i'm aware

Yeah, that too. I don't personally know anyone who uses the site (or, well, anyone who uses the site other than the people who harassed my friends). And while I saw a couple strangers jumping into people's mentions on other sites to offer "here's how to get started!" guides, fundamentally I don't think joining a social network where everyone on it is a stranger to me works?

yeah i had someone approach me who seemed to be familiar with the specific niche strain of harassment we get, but then segued into "and pillowfort has much better tools for controlling your experience" which is like uh ok but i don't know anyone there so my experience would be nothing

I remember when Tumblr was starting to go to crap, people suggested Pillowfort. And then no one talked about it again. I think they went offline for a long time due to some security stuff?

I think I had an account there at some point...

Yeah after one of their first big user surges they had a big breach of their payment system and a bunch of people had their credit card info stolen IIRC. seems… bad? especially to do it to their own earliest users?

I had an early account but I didn’t pay for it that way so I didn’t have my data stolen
