planning on starting making my own gaiwan after my next shift at the ceramics studio so i can be cool* does anyone have Things About Gaiwans they like to see. I feel like they're deceptively simple but I'm also not well versed enough in teaware to be able to isolate the certain parts that make it feel 'good' if that makes sense. i AM planning on giving it little filter holes though because i love myself

*highly subjective

im a guy who sucks and a ton of shit happened pretty much immediately after posting this but. i finally carved out some time / had like two hours to kill so I made a little pinch pot 'gaiwan' after my shift. he does not look Extremely Nice but i consider this a good step in the right direction cuz I wasn't able to throw on the wheel today.

i call it my 'tea pog'. the working theory is that his nose/snout & the general Shape of it will let me filter out leaves nicely based on how it felt while making it but I think everything will be more evident after it's full of hot water lol. (it's also probably way too thick but fuck it we ball. i have Strong Hands)

I really like flared edges! Pontentially more fragile, but looks cool imo and helps reduce burned fingers. Also, in a similar vein, a nice deep indentation on the, uh, lid nub (?) that fits my finger nicely is always really satisfying to me and helps with comfortable, controlled pours. :)

this is incredibly helpful! thank you so much - i've just been doing a Deep Analysis tm on my lil run of the mill one i got from white2tea and this made me realize my dissatisfaction with the nubbin vs my fingies (the angles juuuust a little too weird for my hands)

this is genuinely very cool, I'd be curious to see what the result is!

the main thing I would personally want to keep in mind is the weight of the base... very heavy gaiwan can quickly become hard to use, especially of they're on the larger volume side. this is because they are heavy and torque the hand, which can hurt if you already have to pinch it. I just think this particular point is really easy to overlook on accident

i loooove the gas kiln!! slightly surprised by the pitting on the inside but shino i used has a tendency to do that - it really worked its magic, a thing i love love is the pink fuming on the white clay body, it makes the raw parts look so cohesive with the orange body. shino my beloved

i'm curious as well! I did some test runs just with water that involve holding it at the usual filtering angle on the spout side and it seems like it should work A Regular Amount, (definitely not perfect) but it should also be viable from the other side lol. I'll update ya once I brew with him & see if the heat changes anything in terms of use too
