as for what systems i would use for an xcom hack according to my personal tastes, im currently thinking about:

  • genesys obviously, like i said i already started a hack in genesys years ago and i think it was pretty good
  • cyberpunk red (this would be a pretty big project but i do think the core systems would make a great fit)
  • gurps 4e (im always looking for an excuse to use gurps for something. sorry. as if its my fault.)
  • a forged in the dark hack would actually make a lot of sense especially set during the advent occupation era. not something i would probably do but i have to mention it because of how much sense it makes!
  • this is more an honorable mention bc the game isnt out yet but ive gone on record as saying crucibles of aether would be a great starting point for a Phoenix Point hack and i think similarly it would make for an interesting xcom hack

maybe, maaaaybe, the cypher system? especially early days discovering alien tech that isn't quite fully researched, the whole cypher idea would tie in nicely

maybe also a heavily modified lancer (maybe borrowing ideas from icon too)? it's got the crunch if that's what you're looking for & it already has some nice downtime mechanics that'd slot in nicely with the ebb and flow of xcom missions.

cypher and lancer/icon/beacon did cross my mind while writing this post!! you bring up some really good points abt them tho. cyphers as alien artifacts is a really cool concept, and yesss, the mission/downtime cycle and combat/narrative structure of lancer et al would be such a good fit.
i could imagine cypher being perfect for a game set like, during the 2015 invasion but outside of xcom, a sort of x-files style thing where a small group of people try to figure out what's going on before its too late (and picking up alien artifacts and discarded xcom gear as they go)
