Some of my favorite pages from my horror/fantasy webcomic, Mage and the Endless Unknown.

(each of these pages were drawn one year apart from the next)

MAGE started out as an inktober project back in 2018. I'd made a couple attempts at the month long art challenge but, like most people, never actually finished. I figured if I wanted to get it done at least once, the best way to do that would be to make each illustration part of a narrative. Despite catching the flu halfway through, it worked! And then I kept doing it every year, continuing the story each October up until 2021 when Iron Circus contacted me just as I was thinking about giving it an ending.

My process for each chapter was:

  1. have a vague idea of where I want the story to go after finishing the previous chapter
  2. forget about it for 11 months
  3. remember in September, panic, consider not doing it that year
  4. spend a day roughly planning out the chapter, adding and removing and condensing pages until I have something I can reasonably finish
  5. gather references
  6. draw the damn thing

I was always exhausted by the end of the month, but it was a labor of love ಥ‿ಥ

(tho if I ever attempt a project like this again, slap me hard across the face)

The comic is complete and you can read it on the main site!! Or you can wait to hold it in your hands when the graphic novel (with revised art) comes out...soon!!

Your ink work is so gorgeous! 😍 I love how you're able to clearly portray the dark atmosphere while still keeping it well-lit and clear to read. It's art goals wow. I'll have to put this story on my reading list~
