My hatereading of TVTropes has become love/hate reading, as while they are wrong and annoying about almost everything, there's a quaint Old Internet feel to it - these are real people who aren't seeking money or fame or political influence, they're just honestly very bad at watching movies.

(and at fact-checking their "Real Life" section. and following their People Sit On Chairs rule. and understanding the word "subversion." and knowing what is a trans person. and progressing beyond 2003 in the way they talk about gay people. and while stereotype concepts like Scary Black Man could be called out and discussed responsibly, this responsibility cannot be handled by TVTropers tagging every Black man who scares them.)

hm. well that isn't that great. perhaps the Old Internet was not a perfect place. anyway a trope I genuinely like is Unspoken Plan Guarantee (if characters share their plan with the audience, it will fail; if they don't, it will succeed) because damn, it really does always work like that

honestly tv tropes is a really useful resource for getting a rundown on an unfamiliar series. the article will give you a basic synopsis, and also a good sense of what its fans actually like about it.

honestly this is close to why I read it also, because although I think I am better than the average troper at big-picture analysis, sometimes I miss details and the trope page helps me fill it in

(but then it turns back into hate reading as it "fills in" character motivations that are absolutely definitely not what was going on)

I remember in Baby Driver they did the thing where you couldn't hear the plan as it was explained because of the music and I thought "Ah good the plan will work now" but then the one guy complained he wasn't listening and so we heard Baby repeat the plan back and I thought "You fools, you're screwed now."

there's a lot about TVTropes that is bad and cringe but honestly i've found it invaluable for a lot of applications, especially when you go "what was that one thing... where all i remember about it is uhhhhh this thing happened" and like god help you if you don't know the name of the trope for the thing, but i've helped a lot of people find shows/books/etc. they forgot the title of that way LMAO

it is so, so much more bloated than it was >10 years ago when I edited and wrote (a) page

joke but there is a trope for stepping with your left foot and stepping with your right foot. So, the trope sections are incredibly long and repetitive because you will see the same plot point under 20 different tropes
