one other thing about that post is the example of Beat-Tribe Cup and just generally how Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is kind of a juggernaut in the Japanese arcade FG scene.

Something I’ve been thinking about a lot is how there’s demand for a new Virtua Fighter game. I do get it -- most of it is, I think, just VF fans wanting Sega to act like the franchise exists at all outside of Japan as anything other than a minigame in the Like a Dragon series (or at least recognise that Ultimate Showdown’s netcode is just not good enough).

But the thing about VF as it currently exists is that Final Showdown (and Ultimate Showdown) as a Virtua Fighter game is really fucking good. It’s so good that people are still playing it over 10 years after its release. It’s so good that SEGA ported the entire game over to the Dragon Engine when they put it on PS4. I would not envy anyone in the position of having to design a potential Virtua Fighter 6, because I’m not even sure how you would iterate on VF5FS. Where do you go from there? Do you add a super meter to VF? Please don’t add a fucking super meter to VF jesus christ
