an idea I’ve been entertaining for a while is playing some kind of narrative-heavy game on my stream in Japanese as a form of language practice, and I’m thinking some kind of old RPG so I can just stay on text boxes for as long as I need to look up all the kanji I am guaranteed to not recognise

I was originally thinking I’d just go with the obvious and play Final Fantasy VII, but thus far I’ve had Black/Matrix and Moon recommended to me

To me, it sounds like a double-edged sword; something that HAS been translated gives you a way to compare and maybe accelerate the learning opportunity (and perhaps make the stream flow a bit better). However, diving into something WITHOUT a translation will force you to actively try and translate yourself, and also give you the opportunity to play something that wouldn't otherwise be available.
