One of the more infamous titles in the Guilty Gear series is the oft-maligned four-player endeavour, Guilty Gear Isuka. There's a lot to say about this game - a lot of which I will not be covering. Sure, I have opinions on the game design, the overall package, etcetera, but that's well-worn territory. Maybe some other time.

Instead, I want to focus on the kanji that adorns various parts of the game's iconography: the eponymous 鶍 (isuka).

Last night, I began the process of learning I-no in GGACPR; partly because I’ve become increasingly frustrated with Venom’s weaknesses in that game compared to how low-impact his strengths are, partly because I looked at I-no and thought, “Y’know, she’s kinda like UMVC3 Magneto”1

The experience thus far has been:

  1. Okay, I’ll focus on getting some basic combos, neutral tools and okizeme patterns in my hands and I won’t worry about doing the hard stuff (like HCL FRC combos) until later
  2. Struggle for 20 minutes trying to do 2K 6P 5H sj.IAD j.K j.S j.236S (the sj.IAD j.K is a 2F link)
  3. Have my friend who plays I-no tell me “that route sucks, just do the HCL FRC stuff”

I’ve got my work cut out for me, huh

  1. Does a little bit of everything with solid movement and space control tools, but ultimately shines on offence with an emphasis on lightning-fast layered high/low mixups
