If I’m getting back into film photography, then I definitely need to do new things:
- simulate Aerochrome film using tri chrome shooting on Rollei Infrared
- try large format photography using 4x5 pinhole or finding a cheap large format camera
That’s too nerdy though.
You know, "lost technology of ancients", while being a trope, sometimes does exist in reality. For example, like, large format lenses, color infrared film, technical pan, autochrome lumiere.
Why? Corporate secrecy, large-scale manufacturing stuff that absolutely does not scale down. You can't make Aerochrome now because it was only economical when doing huge-volume manufacturing using nasty chemicals, and coating that film also needed machines bolted to bedrock.
Large format stuff is the same, there ARE people that make something, but it's so low scale it's not worth it. No one nailed autochrome lumiere right too, it's always too off, and nobody really figured the original mix. Or shutters. It so easy for a hobbyist to manufacture a nice point-and-shoot, but any interesting and precise shutter tech is just locked away to corporate archives, and it will die there.
Imagine high-speed leaf shutters? Nah, it's way outta any reasonable project.
So again, how to get a simulated Aerochrome in 2023?
