You're probably already aware of recent John Carmack conservative pipeline happenings, but I feel I should give some pointers, mainly that it's really not surprising -- he always Was Like That. Carmack never was really on-the-line or aware of politics in general, especially even inter-personal politics. First signals were like, of how he fired McGee circa Quake II.
(because another employee, who's now COO of another well known company, did some underhanded stuff, and Carmack was absolutely oblivious to that and got baited hook line and sinker).
He's so unaware of stuff that he actually failed to do anything meaningful at Oculus too, because it involved workplace politics too. So being oblivious and falling into the rabbit hole of that is... par the course for him.
