in reply to @slimelia's post:

A lotta stuff uses Steam/Epic/Xbox networking these days.

Gonna plug a post I made the other day about building games, some of which do have dedicated apps but most rely on Something to get around having people know how to configure anything.

Some I didn't list there because "chill" was one of the reqs:

  • 7 Days to Die. Not exactly chill. Does have dedicated server.
  • Conan Exiles. It's being eaten alive by aggressive monetization and by nature of being Conan universe is full of Highly Problematic Things but you can host a dedicated server of your own.
  • V Rising is an early access ARPG style survival craft full of vampires, with dedicated server option.
  • could always mod Subnautica's legacy branch and run Nitrox for multiplayer.

oh thank u for that post!! very much the kinda thing i'm after. the ones u listed here less so coz i also kind of want a chill vibe ๐Ÿ˜… a few of the games in that list are already on my steam wishlist & i didn't even realise they had multiplayer, like Staxel and Eco! (do they have dedicated servers, do you know?) i also own No Man's Sky and keep meaning to check it out but never have done. also i'll add i own & HAVE played Tower Unite and i do quite enjoy it BUT i find it difficult to make friends there (the EU servers are full of people who sit in the casino and never talk, the US servers have more people who talk but the connection isn't great for me. i would not particularly place Tower Unite in this category but it IS a very interesting game with a lot of features. if you ever played GMod Tower its the standalone sequel to that!)

i wish it was easier to filter games by "allows dedicated servers" lol. also some of the games you posted look right up my street but are a wee bit pricey to ask all my pals to get & half of them have toasters for PCs which rules out a lotta games, which SUCKS

the regular version of Staxel definitely has a dedicated server, I don't think the CE version does though. (Console Edition, which comes packaged with the game, runs a bit lighter, as it's a PC build of what was released for the Switch; my PC is old but was decent for its time, and I'm better off not running the server but can do single or connect to others just fine, if that gives any indication of how performance might go for the potatoes). Server is in the game files, not a separate install.

SteamDB lists an "Eco Server" app so I'm guessing it has dedicated. It would make sense if it did.

NMS is fun! Or, at least, I had fun. I even did a successful hardcore run (on the third attempt) and I rrrrrrrrarely do permadeath stuff. Not dedicated, though, so the multiplayer could poof someday. Goes on sale a lot. Crossplays.

I'm keeping an eye on Wildmender, dunno why I forgot about that one until now, dunno if it will have dedicated but it looks to be a chill "regrow the world" game, with multi, which I've been looking for since encountering the idea in modded minecraft years ago. Has a demo out now.

Marvellyous mentioned Valheim might fit the chill builder vibe on my other post. Unsure about dedicated server. I've been cautiously watching that one due to how big the hype spike was when it released, and how I never hear about it anymore. (And I'm trying to stop buying so many games that are Better With Friends until I get some Friends Who Play The Same Games)

ohhhh Wildmender looks really cool. i've also heard Vintage Story mentioned, which seems to let you have dedicated servers and looks decent? and Astroneer keeps popping up as a game with dedicated servers and i'll be honest that looks right up my street

Valheim ( https://store.steampowered.com/app/892970/Valheim/ ) is a viking/medieval type, you can build building from pieces, you can explore and fight mobs and bosses
Satisfactory ( https://store.steampowered.com/app/526870/Satisfactory/ ) is a futuristic factory builder, most building you place are premade but you can place walls, roofs and other decorative objects to make a sort of warehouse. There's also exploration which is needed at some point and light combat.
Project Zomboid ( https://store.steampowered.com/app/108600/Project_Zomboid/ ) is a isometric zombie survival game, where the only objective is to survive as long as you can. It's pretty difficult but might be fun with friends.
The Forest ( https://store.steampowered.com/app/242760/The_Forest/ ) is another zombie-like survival game, pretty spooky at times. It has an ending so at some point you will finish it but until then you can build a base, gather resources, explore to find new tools and lore.
Unturned ( https://store.steampowered.com/app/304930/Unturned/ ) is a pretty old game and an another zombie survival but last time I played it was a long time ago so it might be a different game at this point. It's also free.
Space Engineers ( https://store.steampowered.com/app/244850/Space_Engineers/ ) is a sandbox scifi game, you gather resources and then build whatever you want (usually a spaceship). You used to start in space a long time ago and mine from asteroids but they introduced huge planets at some point.

All the above have dedicated servers and played them with a GTX 970 which is a 2014 GPU and you could check prices on https://isthereanydeal.com/ , there might be some sales on other sites or set up an alert for a sale.

ooh thank you!! i can't say how much my friends will necessarily take to these but some have been on my radar for a while & i didn't realise they had dedicated servers LOL. i own Space Engineers but never tried it - everyone always said its poorly optimised or something? ive also been looking at Astroneer which looks similar
