imagine the utopian society we'd have if windows let you have separate home and root partitions like linux does..... reinstalling windows without losing personal files would be so beautifully easy (i know windows DOES have a button that says "reinstall windows but keep my files" but in my experience that works precisely 1% of the time)

agreed but also i don't think any linux distro is up to scratch yet for use by general public (i.e. the not-quite computer literate). i couldn't sit my work colleagues in front of it and assume it'd all be fine and not break/be broken by them
The number of windows machines I've met that were basically bricked because their hard drives were barely big enough to hold their current OS, so the remaining space gets filled with undeletable update files...
